1. Nintendo Switch 2 Preorders Start April 24, Launching June 5

Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 will begin in the U.S. and Canada at 12:00 a.m. ET on April 24, with GameStop's preorders starting at 11 a.m. ET the same day. 2. Meta Updates Threads Domain and Faces Layoffs in Reality Labs

Meta's social network Threads has transitioned from Threads.net to Threads.com, which is now its default domain. The company acquired the Threads.com domain in September 2024, following the initial launch of Threads in July 2023. Additionally, the Threads web app has been updated to enhance user experience with features like custom feeds and saved posts. Meanwhile, Meta has laid off an unspecified number of employees in its Reality Labs division, affecting teams in Oculus Studios and hardware efforts, including the VR fitness game Supernatural, which Meta acquired for over $400 million.

3. Interest in Google's Chrome Amid Search Monopoly Trial

As the Justice Department conducts a remedies trial regarding Google's search monopoly, various companies have expressed interest in acquiring the Chrome browser if Google is forced to sell. Perplexity's Chief Business Officer Dmitry Shevelenko prefers that Google retains ownership rather than selling to OpenAI, while Yahoo has also shown interest. DuckDuckGo CEO Gabriel Weinberg estimates Chrome's value at $50 billion, based on its user base, although he notes that this price exceeds DuckDuckGo's financial capabilities.

4. Perplexity Launches AI Voice Assistant on iOS and Android Devices

Perplexity's AI voice assistant is now available on both iOS and Android devices, allowing users to perform tasks such as writing emails, setting reminders, and making dinner reservations. The assistant can be activated within the app and continues to respond while users navigate away. It is compatible with older devices, including the iPhone 13 mini. Recently, Perplexity updated its iPhone app with a new Voice Mode for media search, calendar management, and ride booking. However, screen sharing is not yet supported on iOS, unlike on Android.
